Upper Arkansas River Valley

Increasing population means increasing demand for water. Because of the Prior Appropriation Doctrine that Colorado follows when distributing resources, the Arkansas River cannot be used to sustain the development of the Upper Arkansas River Valley. As a direct result, development of groundwater resources is proceeding at an ever-growing rate. In order to provide safe, sustainable development for Buena Vista, Salida, and Poncha Springs, the basement and groundwater resources of the area must be characterized.

Working with the Geophysics Summer Field Camp, we plan on characterizing the basement geometry and aquifer flow and recharge. So far, deep seismic, gravity, DC/IP electrical, and transient electromagnetic methods have been employed along with surface geology mapping to give us a preliminary picture of the granitic basement.

Should you have any questions or would like to contribute well or other data (well logs, flow rates, quality information) to this project, please contact Andy Kass at mkass@mines.edu.
